Warnungen:

Bus Fethye-Pamukkale: I had been told that using the buses in Turkey was a bit of an experience, but nothing could have prepared us for what was 'the trip from hell'. We boarded the 30-seater 'coach' at Fethyie, destined for Pamukkule, and should have realised then that this was not the right route for us. We were the only tourists on the vehicle and as the coach made its way out of the town and past some familiar signs, we realised we were taking the inland route, rather than the coastal one on which we had arrived. LP's recommendation about this stretch of road is that it is 'shorter, cheaper and less interesting' than the coastal route. It may be these first two things, but I would only suggest taking this option if you want to risk your lives - big time! This trip was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life. The road was very narrow - just one lane in parts - and there were sheer cliffs on the side of the bus we were sitting on. The driver didn't seem to worry that the road was gravel in several places, and there were many instances where the vehicle's back wheels came to a screaming halt at the edge of the cliff. It was the first time I felt close to death, and I honestly thought my parents would have to come and collect me … if you know what I mean. Please can you advise people NOT to take this route, as the experience is one I wouldn't wish anyone to repeat.

Geldautomaten:  Beware when using an ATM. The local crooks can arrange for amn ATM machine to swallow your card. You put the card into the machine it then shows a message reading 'suspend'. One helpful Turk appears, you try your pin number under his helpful direction. Later, when you are off the scene he uses your memorized pin number to bleed your account dry. This cost us GBP630 in Bodrum last summer.

Taxis: I ran into another scam with Istanbul taxi drivers: the meter showed the correct amount, but when handing the taxi driver a note, say for five million lira, he then hands back a note for five hundred thousand, suggesting that you have given him the wrong note in the first place. This happened to me on two occasions. The first time I assumed I had made a mistake and had indeed confused the two notes. When it happened again three days later, I realised that it was a scam.

Pigeon Valley Walk:A word of warning to those doing the Pigeon Valley walk. We came to a very steep section of the valley which we were reluctant to walk.  There were a group of men sitting nearby who assured us it was ok. We had another look but decided to backtrack and find a different way. As we headed in one direction which looked ok, one of the men said he would show us the way to go. He took us along a path that was still quite scary, but mildly safer than the original way. As we walked he demonstrated his extreme accuracy with a slingshot - hitting fruit on trees a hundred metres away. We got to the bottom of the gorge and then the fellow demanded payment of 1.25 million lire "for a bottle of raki". Remembering the accuracy with which he used the slingshot, we didn't want to argue.
